Hypertension
What is Hypertension?
Hypertension or high blood pressure is a medical condition in which the arterial blood pressure is elevated. When the heart contracts it pumps blood throughout the body, delivering blood to muscles and organs. There are two types of blood pressure, the systolic blood pressure which occur when the heart contracts and the diastolic blood pressure which occur when the heart relaxes. The normal range for systolic blood pressure is 90-140 mmHg and the normal range for diastolic blood pressure is 60-90 mmHg. If the blood pressure is 140/90 or above in a resting condition it is categorized as hypertension.
What causes Hypertension?
In most cases the reason for hypertension is unknown. This type of hypertension is referred to as primary or essential hypertension. When there is a known cause it is referred to as secondary hypertension. Reasons for secondary hypertensions include chronic renal disease, disease of the renal arteries and endocrine disorders.
